Relax in the peaceful surroundings of Rockingham Forest
Breathing in the crisp dark night through the flickering light of the fireplaces, chins sunk in illuminated bubbles, ears pricked up for the nocturnal rustle of wildlife, we become one with nature as soothing jets wash away stress of the week.
Standing with the lark, my husband and I will return here at dawn, enjoying the hot tub and boundless rural beauty of Landal’s newest park, Rockingham Forest.
On the edge of ancient woodland and situated on the grounds of what was once RAF Kings Cliffe airfield, our luxury retreat is nestled in rolling Northamptonshire countryside, awash in beauty, steeped in history – the choice perfect for a family getaway with two teenagers and grandparents in tow.
Boasting a selection of five-star lodges sleeping up to six people, many with outdoor hot tubs and all with their own character and charm, Rockingham Forest is an idyllic base from which to embrace the resplendent countryside of the area, unrivaled views and mile after mile of unspoiled natural beauty.
Our accommodation is The Wansford, a spacious three bedroom lodge furnished to the highest standards, with two super kings and one twin bedroom, all with large screen TV’s and en-suite shower rooms.
Welcoming and spotlessly clean with a blend of essential comfort and luxury, the lodge has a wine cooler, coffee machine, washer-dryer, dishwasher and built-in Bluetooth speakers, as well as a large, user-friendly kitchen and open-plan living room with patio doors to deck with seating, BBQ stand and six-person hot tub, perfect for socializing under the stars.
Whether you’re biking, running or walking, exploration is key, and with so much to see, do and enjoy, just grab your camera, put on your helmet, hiking boots or running shoes and choose your own adventures.
With guests of all ages making up our party, we split up to enjoy separate activities the day before meeting each evening to swap stories over a hearty meal in the comfort of our wooded haven.
Golf enthusiasts, our teenagers headed straight for the fairways of Orton Meadows, enjoying a round in the quaint and informal setting of the 18-hole course which is just a 20-minute drive away.
Fans of exquisite scenery, my husband and I explored on foot, drinking in the vast landscape of the park where we were surprised to find a memorial to famed Major Glenn Miller, who performed his last suspension concert at the former base of the RAF in October 1944. before its mysterious disappearance over the English Channel in December of the same year.
Meanwhile my parents, picnic and flask ready, headed for a slice of history at Rockingham Caste, which was built on the instructions of William the Conqueror and served as a royal residence for 450 years.
Charmed by the building’s distinctive Tudor architecture, they took stunning photographs spanning five counties from the castle’s impressive peak.
Mix a stroll around the lakes at nearby Barnwell Country Park, marveling at the big cats at Hamerton Zoo Park or a scenic drive around the beautiful cathedral city of Peterborough, just 15 minutes’ drive away, and it’s easy to customize a stay at Rockingham Forest to be as captivating or relaxing as you wish.
In truth, if you want to rest, just settle into your bathrobe and slippers, enjoying a glass of wine as the hot tub comes to life and a lone tawny owl sings of the twilight.
