Looking for a five star luxury romantic break? The Glenlo Abbey Hotel in Galway has it all
Where and why
After nearly a year and several canceled plans due to Covid, we finally arrived at the five star Glenlo Abbey to celebrate a long past anniversary and it is safe to say it was worth the wait!
I have to admit a particular penchant for old country-style houses, so the original 18th century house, with its large reception rooms, high ornate ceilings, and old abbey building with tower immediately appealed to me, not to mention of the original part of the Orient Express located outside on the ground.
And our room was just as opulent, think of the golden tones, the deep rugs, the view of the lake or the park. The bathroom featured what could have been the largest marble tub I have ever seen, complete with toiletries from The Handmade Soap Company.
Set amid two hundred acres of land on the edge of Lough Corrib – but only three miles from Galway City, with its pubs, restaurants and lively atmosphere, the location is also second to none.
Real estate activities
While Galway City is literally a ten minute drive away, there is plenty to keep you busy on the grounds, if you would rather just sit back and enjoy the beautiful surroundings for the duration of your stay, which after a previous trip full of exploration and day trips are exactly what we chose to do.
My husband was delighted with the 138 acre lakefront golf course, managing to make not one but two games during our stay. The only Championship 9 Hole golf course has an excellent reputation and features rolling hills, an island green, lakes and most importantly, as I have learned, it has the 21 Bay Driving Range, to keep you warm. before a round of golf.
If, like me, golf doesn’t float your boat, the hotel can arrange for estate bikes, horseback riding, boating, water sports and tennis, as well as on-site falconry, as well as tours. picturesque walks in all serenity around the vast grounds.
However, my personal highlight was the private cinema, the hall at Glenlo’s Abbey Theater designed with meticulous detail to represent an old world cinematic experience that feels like stepping back in time, but with the added joys of luxury. and modern comfort.
Guests can book a private screening at no additional cost, which we both absolutely loved, with popcorn and drinks to enjoy with your movie, but be aware that slots are booked quickly, but fear not, if you can’t take a slot there is also a film screening open every night.
The Glenlo Abbey Hotel & Estate boasts 2 * AA Rosettes, Best Private Dining with the Restaurant Association of Ireland and a 2017 Gold Medal for Irish Restaurant Fine Dining, making it a superb dining option. catering and entertainment for formal and informal occasions.
These include the River Room Restaurant overlooking the estate, the Pullman Restaurant on the Orient Express, the Oak Cellar Bar.
We sampled Pullman and Oak Cellar Bar during our stay and were impressed with the quality of the food on offer. But the highlight for me was the Overseas Dinner, the Pullman, two antique railroad cars, once starring in Murder on the Orient Express, and now converted into a lavish restaurant.
The food was absolutely exceptional, as was the staff, and the unique setting and novelty were just the icing on the cake.
The hotel also offers three elegant reception rooms in the main house that exude old world charm, where guests can have afternoon tea or a relaxing drink in the evening and enjoy a log fire and of a classical pianist to add to the grandeur of your surroundings.
Put your Glo on
The recent addition of the Glo Spa is a huge plus. Offering a range of ELEMIS treatments, you can then unwind with refreshments in the relaxation room or head to the GLO Tranquility Terrace which offers spectacular views of Corrib Lake.
The ultimate indulgence awaits you with Glenlo Abbey’s brand new seasonal package, âAutumn on the Estateâ starting at ⬠760 for two adults sharing a room.
