Start Up Loans, part of the British Business Bank, has set out its commitment to unlock the talent of thousands more people across the UK by helping them to start their own business.

The disruptive impact of Coronavirus on the UK’s economy and traditional working patterns has catalysed many to reconsider their careers, whether because of additional time to reflect during lockdown, furlough or a change in employment status.

Of the 80,000+ Start Up Loans recipients since 2012, a third were unemployed at the time of application. Start Up Loans data also indicates that the scheme is particularly effective in enabling young entrepreneurs to start up a business, with millennials representing more than half of all previously no background check loans recipients since 2012.

The Start Up Loans scheme has also seen this trend continue with the youngest generation of entrepreneurs, with double the number of Gen Z applicants using the scheme as a route out of unemployment in 2020 compared to 2019.

The Start Up Loans scheme was initially set up as the UK economy was recovering from the 2008 credit crisis, with a mission to make business ownership a viable career for individuals who would struggle to raise finance. Building on a nine-year track record of success, the scheme is set to play a vital role as our economy starts to rebuild after the impact of Covid-19, providing both funding and wider support for people starting up their own business for the first time.

Richard Bearman, Managing Director, Start Up Loans said: “Start Up Loans is uniquely positioned to drive the nation’s investment in creative, entrepreneurial talent of any age, thanks to our extensive network of delivery partners and support services. As well as a loan, we support individuals with the practical steps they need to take to begin their own enterprise from writing business plans, accounting and marketing, as well as access to learning with partners such as The Open University.

“It is paramount that we do everything to empower the next generation of young working talent, who have an important part to play in unlocking the UK’s economic recovery, by giving them every chance to succeed, whatever their circumstances. Unemployment can have a catastrophic impact on an individual’s financial security, self-confidence and ability to apply for finance from lenders, and the support provided by Start Up Loans can be of particular use to younger, less experienced business owners.”

Small Business Minister Paul Scully said: “The Government’s Start Up Loans programme has a phenomenal track record of backing budding entrepreneurs across the UK, having helped more than 80,000 people to start their own business.

“Anyone out there looking to strike out, seize opportunities and build something new can benefit from the funding and support which the programme provides. This campaign will be pivotal to our ambition of making the UK the best place in the world to start and grow a business and help us build back better from the pandemic.”

James Talbot, Co-Founder of Pobi Bakery, said: “At the start of the pandemic my partner, Jake, was made redundant and we decided that it was time to start working for ourselves. We took out a loan of £20,000 from Start Up Loans in September 2020 and have never looked back.

“The process of becoming unemployed is stressful and full of uncertainties, but the fact that everyone in the UK has access to schemes like Start Up Loans should be cause for optimism in the current economic environment. Despite all the challenges thrown at the retail industry throughout the last year, we have managed to employ 3 members of staff, open a second site, and are forecasting a turnover of £250,000 in the next financial year. It’s been a huge journey for both of us.”

The Start Up Loans programme provides finance and support for businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs who struggle to access other forms of finance, working with a national network of Delivery Partners based across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Andy Fishburn, Managing Director of Start Up Loans Delivery Partner, Virgin StartUp said: “Virgin StartUp exists to help founders in the UK to start and scale early stage businesses. We’re proud to be working with the British Business Bank to deliver the Start Up Loans scheme to ensure that applicants receive the right combination of funding and support, to not only start up and survive, but thrive. Small businesses have such a vitally important role to play as we look to rebuild communities, the economy and the world more broadly. We look forward to continuing to work with future founders, in our shared mission to inspire entrepreneurs around the UK.”

Selling on Artspace

Relationship of the Parties

The Seller is responsible for accurately describing and pricing the Items it is offering for sale.
The Buyer is solely responsible for determining the value, condition and authenticity of the
Items being purchased and for paying the purchase price to the Seller including any sales
tax, VAT or import/export duties.

The role of Artspace is expressly limited as set forth in the clause above entitled “The Role
of Artspace”. Artspace relies on the sellers for such information and is not responsible in any
way for the description or pricing of Items on the Site provided by the seller. Artspace is not
responsible for the delivery of payment from you to the Seller unless we explicitly agree to
be.

Items available on the site

All Items displayed on the Site are offered for sale subject to availability. Some Items
displayed on the Site are unique and are offered by Sellers that usually have retail
opportunities for the sale of the Item independent from Artspace, and therefore some
Items may no longer be available.

The Site is designed to provide the Buyer access to Items as the Sellers present them.
Accordingly, Artspace does not verify any information provided by the Seller (or its
representative selling an Item) and Artspace makes no representations or warranties with
respect to the Seller, the Item or the information related to the Item.

Sales are “As-Is”

All Items displayed on the Site are sold “As-Is” and “With All Faults”. Neither the Seller nor
Artspace makes any guarantee, warranty or representation, expressed or implied, to any
Buyer with respect to any Item, including without limitation, its condition, merchantability,
fitness for a particular purpose, quality, rarity, importance, provenance, designer or creator,
exhibitions, literature, historical relevance, or as to whether the Buyer acquires any
reproduction right or other intellectual property right in any Item. No statement anywhere,
whether oral or written, shall be deemed any such guarantee, warranty or representation.

Auctions

Artspace may make available the Artspace Auctions where sellers may offer goods for sale by auction to the highest bidder. Artspace is independent from the buyers and sellers that participate in the Artspace Auctions and no agency, partnership, joint venture, employee-employer or franchiser-franchisee or fiduciary relationship is intended or created by the operation of the Artspace Auctions. Artspace may, but is not obligated to provide intermediary services between the buyer and sellers using Artspace Auctions. Artspace reserves the right in its sole discretion and at any time including during an auction to refuse or revoke permission for sellers to offer goods or for buyers to submit bids.

How bidding works

All bids shall be in United States Dollars. Participating sellers and buyers may be required to register on the site, may select a username and password, and must agree to be bound by these terms. Buyers must register a valid credit card with Artspace and agree to pay a buyer’s premium to Artspace which shall be added to the successful bid price. The buyer’s premium shall be equal 15% of the successful bid price for bids on some auction items. The successful bidder shall pay the purchase price plus the buyer’s premium as the final purchase price. The agreements between the buyers and sellers shall not be governed by the U.N. Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, the application of which is expressly excluded.

Bids are submitted by clicking the “bid” button on the site; all bids are final and cannot be amended or retracted once submitted. All bids will be recorded by Artspace and such recording shall constitute the final and conclusive determination and record of each bid and the highest bid.

Seller’s reserve price

Sellers may set a minimum price for an auction item (“Reserve Price”). A Seller is not required to accept any bids for less than the Reserve Price. If bids are placed below the seller’s Reserve Price, the bidder will be notified that the bid is below the Reserve Price.

Artspace bidding

Artspace may, through employees, submit bids on auction items that are subject to a Reserve Price. Artspace may (1) submit the opening bid on behalf of the seller at the Reserve Price, (2) place single or successive bids on behalf of the seller in response to other bids that are below the Reserve Price. In no circumstances will Artspace place a bid that is above the Reserve Price.

Place your bid

Enter any bid amount as long as it is greater than or equal to the “Next Minimum Bid” (displayed below the bid field) and click on “Place Bid”. This will automatically place a straight bid at the next increment and hold the bid you submitted (if higher than the “Next Minimum Bid”) as your “Maximum Bid”. You will receive an email confirmation of your bid and will be notified by email when you are outbid.

By placing a bid each buyer irrevocable authorizes Artspace to immediately charge Buyer’s registered credit card an amount equal to the buyer’s premium.

Please note that if the auction moves to a physical live event (the auction page will specify this and the bidder will be noticed as such by email), the highest bidder after the close of the online auction will be the opening bid at the event and will be notified within 48 hours after the event if the bid is the final winning bid or been outbid by someone at the event.

Bidding Increments

When placing a bid, enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the work. Entering your “Maximum Bid” does not necessarily mean you will pay that price, you may pay less. The Auction system will Proxy Bid on your behalf up to the amount of your Maximum Bid. Once you enter your Maximum Bid, your current bid displayed will be in the amount of the “Next Minimum Bid.” As the auction proceeds, Artspace will compare your bid to those of other bidders. When you are outbid, the system automatically bids on your behalf according to the bidding increments established for that auction up to (but never exceeding) your maximum bid. We increase your bid by increments only as much as necessary to maintain your position as highest bidder. Your maximum bid is kept confidential until it is exceeded by another bidder. If your maximum bid is outbid, you will be notified via email so that you can place another bid.

If the auction is a benefit auction or an auction with a physical event (which will be noted on the auction page), all online bids will be transferred to that event and Artspace or the organization running the event will continue to monitor your bids in person and continue Proxy Bidding on your behalf up to your maximum bid. Winning bidders will be notified within 48 hours after the close of the auction. If you are not contacted by Artspace, you were not the highest bidder.

Closing the Auction

Upon the close of each auction Artspace shall separately confirm the highest bid to the seller and notify the buyer submitting the highest bid that the bid was successful and the amount of the buyer’s premium due to Artspace to be charged to buyer’s credit card. Artspace shall thereupon charge buyer’s credit card in the amount of the buyer’s premium.

Upon receipt of the buyer’s premium Artspace shall email both the successful buyer and seller and shall provide each with the name, address, telephone number and email address of the other; buyer and seller are thereafter solely responsible for arranging for the transmission of payment of the purchase price within 24 hours of the transmission of the Artspace email and for prompt shipment of the goods after receipt of good funds. If for any reason after Artspace’s initial confirmation of the successful bid the buyer cancels the transaction or fails to make payment to the seller, the buyer shall remain liable to Artspace for the full buyer’s premium and Artspace reserves the right to retain such buyer’s premium in addition to any other remedies it has at law or equity.

Any dispute with respect to the auction of any item shall be resolved between buyer and seller and without the participation of Artspace. Seller is solely responsible for collecting payment from the buyer. Artspace does not guaranty and is not responsible in any way for the performance of buyers or sellers participating in the auction.

Responsibilities of Auction Buyers and Sellers

Goods offered on Artspace Auctions must be tangible goods that meet the requirements of the Site. Sellers shall not offer any goods for sale or consummate any transaction initiated on Artspace Auctions that violates or could cause Artspace to violate any applicable law, statute, ordinance or regulation. Artspace shall have sole discretion as to whether a specific item meets the requirements of the Site, which determination is final.

Sellers offering goods shall post a description of the goods offered and may set a minimum reserve price, a minimum overbid amount and the termination of the auction of the goods. Sellers agree to accept the highest bid above their set reserve price and to deliver the offered goods to the buyer submitting such highest bid. Any goods offered using a seller’s registration log in information shall be deemed by Artspace and any bidding buyer as being offered or authorized by that seller. Sellers are solely responsible for the description, condition, authenticity, and quality of the goods offered. Sellers represent that they are in compliance with all applicable laws, including without limitation those regarding the transmission of technical data exported from the United States or the country in which the seller resides as well as the restrictions on import or export of goods from the seller’s country to the buyer’s country.

By posting goods on the Artspace Auctions each seller represents and warrants that he/she holds free and marketable title to the goods offered and that the sale to any buyer will be free and clear of any and all liens or encumbrances. Sellers agree that Artspace Auctions will publish images and information in English relating to the goods offered by sellers. Sellers are solely responsible for descriptions of goods and all other content provided to Artspace by seller. Each seller agrees that Artspace may reformat content submitted by sellers in order to best serve the needs and formatting of the Artspace Auctions. Sellers grant Artspace a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license to use the listing information in other areas of the site in our sole discretion.

Sellers are responsible for shipment of goods to successful bidding buyers upon receipt of the purchase price. Sellers must make shipment promptly on receipt of good funds from buyers. Sellers are responsible for collecting any and all applicable taxes from the successful buyer and for remitting such taxes to the applicable taxing authority.

Buyers are responsible for determining the value, condition and authenticity of the goods. Buyers participating in the Artspace Auctions represent and warrant by placing any bid that they are ready, willing and able to pay the purchase price bid, all applicable taxes and the buyer’s premium all within 24 hours of the close of the auction if they are the successful bidder. Any bids submitted using a buyer’s registration log in information shall be deemed made or authorized by that buyer. Each buyer placing any bid represents and warrants that such bids are not the product of any collusive or other anti-competitive agreement and are otherwise consistent with federal and state laws. Each buyer is responsible for payment of New York State and local sales tax, any applicable use tax, any federal luxury tax or any other taxes assessed on the purchase of the goods. The buyer is solely responsible for identifying and obtaining any necessary export, import, or other permit for the delivery of the goods and for determining whether the goods are subject to any export or import embargoes.

Artspace not Responsible for Auction Submissions; No Representations or Warranties

Sellers and buyers agree that Artspace is not responsible for and does not make any representations or warranties (express or implied) as to the goods offered, including without limitation as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, the accuracy of the description of the goods, the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, whether the goods are subject to export or import restrictions or embargoes, shipment or delivery, packing or handling, the ability of the buyer to pay, the ability of the seller to collect the purchase price, or any other representation or warranty of any kind or nature. Artspace is not responsible for any errors or failures to execute bids placed online, including, without limitation, errors or failures caused by (1) loss of connection to the internet or to the online bidding software by any party, (2) a breakdown or failure of the online bidding software, or (3) a breakdown or failure of any seller’s or buyer’s internet connection or computer or (4) any errors or omissions in connection with the bidding process.

A good mattress is a necessity. It keeps you comfortable at night, supports your joints while you sleep and provides a welcome resting place when you’re just lounging in bed. If your mattress is sub-par, your body has probably already let you know it’s time to upgrade. But finding the best mattresses can take a little detective work. The market is flooded with options like memory foam mattresses, hybrid mattresses and cooling mattresses, so it can be hard to know what will suit you—and where to start.

Ultimately, the best mattress for you is the one that will meet your specific needs or solve a problem. If you struggle with back pain, for example, you need a mattress that’s specially designed to tackle that issue. Ditto for sleep specifics, like sleeping on your side or a tendency to overheat at night.

While there isn’t a lone mattress that’s a one-size-fits-all solution for everyone, there are a few that have risen to the top this year. Start your search for the best mattresses here. All prices listed are for a queen size.

Best Mattress Overall

Everything is wrapped up in a quilted cooling cover that’s infused with copper fibers, so it stays cool to the touch and helps wick away heat and moisture. And, while supplies last, you can get a new Google Nest Hub with Sleep Sensing (a $100 value) free with your purchase.

What the Reviews Say: One happy sleeper says buying a Nectar mattress was the best thing she’s ever done for herself, writing “I didn’t realize how bad my old mattress was! Nectar sleep is the best sleep I’ve ever had!” Many five-star reviewers also say their pain is gone after switching over to Nectar and leaving their old spring mattresses behind.

The Casper mattress has zones of targeted support, including softer foam around your shoulders to cushion your upper body and firmer foam under your hips, waist and lower back to help keep your spine aligned while you sleep. The AirScape technology also lets air circulate to keep you cool during the night.

  • Sizes: Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Cassatt Mattress combines high-density memory foam (that was engineered by Tempur-Pedic scientists) with densely-packed coils to create a plush, responsive mattress that’s as comfortable as it is supportive. The pillow top offers enhanced pressure relief, while the Tencel cover helps wick away moisture, so you stay cool, but cozy. And, unlike other mattresses of its caliber, it’s suitable for an adjustable base. If you prefer a firm mattress, Stearns and Foster offers a similar model in a luxury firm option.

What the Reviews Say: While the price tag is a little higher than others on this list, most reviewers agree that it’s worth it. My husband and I saved up for over a year to purchase this mattress. We put pennies away even to be able to afford it and let me tell you it was worth it. WORTH IT,” raves one five-star reviewer. “It is soooo hard getting up in the mornings because it’s like sleeping on clouds. If you’re hesitant about purchasing this, do it. Trust me. Just do it. The bed also has temperature-balancing technology and a breathable fabric that help you sleep cooler. All Sleep Number beds also come with a 100-night sleep trial. If you don’t like it after a few months, you can return it. But keep in mind that all adjustable bases are non-refundable, so that’s not covered by the trial.

What the Reviews Say: One thing reviewers love about this mattress is the adjustability. “Exceptional fit and comfort. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has had back pain or sleepless nights and trouble finding the correct mattress,” writes one five-star reviewer. “My wife and I really enjoy the split mattress and it allows us both to find the perfect sleep position together.”

When is the best month to buy a mattress?

There are mattress sales all year long, but May is usually the best month to buy a mattress for two reasons. The first is that many mattress companies roll out new models in June, so current mattresses often go on sale to clear out inventory and make room. The second is that Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May and the holiday weekend is big for mattress discounts.

How much should I pay for a good mattress?

Mattress prices run the gamut from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. As a general rule, you can get a decent mattress for $1,000 to $1,500 that’s backed up by a decent warranty (usually 10 years or so).

Of course, many more expensive mattresses are made with higher-quality materials, like latex and high-density foams, and last for years (or even decades). But just because a mattress is expensive, it doesn’t mean that you’ll like it best or that it’s the highest quality. Mattresses are really a personal preference and a budget mattress might feel better to you than one that’s $5,000.

Which is better: memory foam or spring mattresses?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to whether memory foam or spring mattresses are better. They both have pros and cons. Memory foam is excellent at contouring your body, providing pressure relief and isolating motion. Memory foam also has a “sinking” feeling that makes you feel like you’re settling into the mattress, rather lying on top of it. Some people like that and some don’t. One downside to memory foam is that it can trap heat, so if you’re a hot sleeper, you may need additional cooling technology or a hybrid mattress.

Spring mattresses are bouncier than memory foam and don’t offer the same motion isolation, but you don’t sink into them. If you prefer the feeling of lying on top of your mattress, you’ll like a spring mattress better than memory foam. Spring mattresses also have better air circulation so they don’t trap heat as much, and they tend to offer more edge-to-edge support.

If you’re torn on which type of mattress you should get, a hybrid model—which combines memory foam with springs—is probably your best bet.

Nucor‘s (NYSE: NUE) latest quarterly figures confirmed a recovery in key end markets, and management was confident that the trend would continue. But what America’s largest steelmaker may not have anticipated is the scale of the recovery.

Demand is so strong that Nucor is not even halfway through its first quarter, but is already forecasting the potential net profit it could earn in the quarter ending April 3. He just announced that his first quarter net profit could exceed (hold your breath) $ 900 million. This is a remarkably high number for several reasons.

“We currently expect our first quarter 2021 results to significantly exceed Nucor’s previous record for quarterly net income, set in 2008,” said CEO Leon Topalian.

Nucor’s first quarter has been quite volatile since 2008, when the company reported net income of $ 409.8 million.

That means two things: A projected net profit of $ 900 million or more for the first quarter of 2021 is not only expected to be the highest on record for the company, but also to break its previous quarterly record by a huge margin. Plus, just to let you know, Nucor made $ 20.3 million in the quarter of last year, so you might as well prepare for the headlines shouting about a jaw-dropping growth number of year on year when the company reports earnings in April.

That $ 900 million is just a predicted number for now, but it reflects Nucor’s confidence. The company is enjoying strong business conditions in most of its end-user markets, particularly non-residential construction and automobiles, and it had a good January in terms of operational performance.

Specifically, the continued strength in prices and volumes is expected to lead to increased sales and profits in Nucor’s core steel mill segment, which manufactures plate, bar and beam.

Likewise, Nucor expects significantly higher profits from its raw materials segment thanks to higher selling prices, such as for iron ore. Just a few days ago Swiss credit increased its iron ore price forecast for 2021-2022 by almost 50% due to tight supply.

Nucor’s outlook for the first quarter is extremely encouraging and should particularly excite income investors who have put their money into this. Dividend Aristocrat, which gives a good 3% currently.

Your best way to pay off vacation debt depends on your cash flow, credit rating, and personal preferences. Here are just a few:

Pay the full balance with the first statement

If you have the cash, this is the fastest way to pay off debt – and the cheapest, because you avoid paying interest. According to the NerdWallet Shopping Survey, 35% of vacation buyers who added credit card debt in 2019 took this approach.

Snowball or trigger an avalanche

The “debt snowball” and “debt avalanche” are two popular methods of paying off debt. What is right for you depends on your financial priorities.

With the debt snowball method, you focus on paying off the smaller balance first, and then transfer the amount you paid on that first debt to the next. The amount you pay on targeted debt keeps increasing, like a snowball going downhill. You can choose this if you need the first few wins by paying the first accounts to stay motivated.

The debt avalanche method may be best if you want to pay as little interest as possible. With this route, you prioritize paying off debt with the highest interest rate, regardless of the size of the balance. Again, when that first debt is settled, you put the amount you paid on it into the next highest interest account, repeating until you are debt free.

The proposed stimulus may require checks for $ 1,400, but the amount your family will receive may be very different. The House Ways and Means Committee devised a different formula for the third round of verifications than the previous two.

See: Are you eligible for a third stimulation check – and if so, when will you get yours?
Find: Stimulus checks to have $ 200,000 income cut

The formula asks:

  • $ 1,400 for a single taxpayer and $ 2,800 for joint filers

  • An additional $ 1,400 per dependent, regardless of the dependent’s age, as long as the person’s social security number is on the filer’s return

  • A phase-out for people whose adjusted gross income is greater than $ 75,000 ($ 112,500 for the head of household filers and $ 150,000 for the joint filers). Phase-out reduces the credit proportionately until it reaches a value of zero at $ 100,000 of adjusted gross income ($ 150,000 for heads of household and $ 200,000 for joint filers).

See: The $ 1,400 stimulus checks always come in – but who qualifies to get one?
Find: Never got your stimulation check? Claim it on your taxes

Payments are based on information contained in the 2019 or 2020 tax returns, whichever is available to the Treasury Department. Those who have not filed income tax returns, such as retirees, will receive payments if the Treasury Department has their information.

As with other payments, those who receive more than they are technically eligible will not have to repay the excess. Those who do not receive payments will be able to claim the amount when they file their 2021 tax return. They will have to wait for their money. Will the economy still need a boost next year? Hopefully not.

Gardening in the yard bloomed like The coronavirus has forced us to stay at home since the growing season began this year. Like Charlotte Mendelson written in april for the New Yorker, “There is no balm for the soul greater than planting seeds.”

PUBLICITY

I calmed down outside this summer by tending to a piece of land in my community garden; and inside, watching more gardening shows than I ever thought would be consumable. “Martha knows better” on HSTG is a brilliant extension of the lifestyle icon’s own dreamy, daily 40s account on Instagram.

While Martha Stewart does not grow cannabis (that we know, at least) at her farm in Bedford, New York, she gave her seal of approval on a comprehensive manual, Growing grass in the garden.

“Beautifully photographed and with clear expert advice, this great primer for growing grass makes it easy to harvest and process a great crop at home,” praises Stewart on his back cover. “I need two copies, one for me and one for Snoop”

Published earlier this year, the 256-page text was written by Johanna Silver, a writer based in Berkeley, Calif., Who was editor-in-chief of the garden at Sunset magazine for a decade and now regularly contributes to Better houses and a better gardensand Martha Stewart alive.

The book was born from a 2018 Chronicle of San Francisco mission to follow a cycle of cannabis cultivation from seed to reserve. Granted, “not a stoner at all,” Silver set out to “grow grass in the garden and document it as a gardener,” continuing to cover cannabis gardening in a recurring column while finding a whole new plant in the process.

“I didn’t know anything, I didn’t know if it was this incredibly mysterious plant that was very complicated to grow,” recalls Silver. “I had people saying to me – people who knew a thing or two – ‘No, you really can’t grow this without light. And I’m like, ‘Wait, what? It cannot be true. It is literally a plant.

PUBLICITY

Silver compares growing cannabis to growing tomatoes: “Cannabis has been grown every year as a warm season wherever humans have lived. A native of Denver, Silver admits, “I didn’t grow up gardening.” I wasn’t swinging in the trees or picking blueberries in the garden with my mom.

She adds, “I actually think my lack of being that green and sunny hippie wild child is a strength, because I fully understand what it’s like to have no knowledge and how to approach it from there. zero. I really tried talking to the newbie, the novice, the scared but damn want to try.

PUBLICITY

This approach has also resulted in a video series for the Leafly cannabis website, where Silver shares step-by-step instructions from home while planting a new set in her own backyard. According to Silver, while now is not the time to sow in most areas, the start of the harvest season is a great time to sort out your garden and what to put in it for next year.

Silver recommends, “Follow your nose. It’s time to smell, smell, smell. Look for dispensaries that are well known for their cultivated cannabis, and find the flavor profiles you love and the strains that work with your body.

PUBLICITY

Here are Silver’s top five pro tips for getting started with “Growing Weed in the Garden” (excluding the obvious first step of reading his book):

  1. With the harvest season upon us, it’s time to step outside and smell the flowers. Much like a masseuse who puts essential oils under your nose to see which one you like best, you can use your instincts and cultivate the scent that appeals to you.
  2. After the odor test, take some samples home to try them out. If smoking isn’t your thing, try simple alcohol-based tinctures or infused coconut oil.
  3. Decide where you will grow next spring. If you have a vegetarian vegetable garden, this is ideal. All you need is a small space, anywhere that will receive at least six hours of direct sunlight per day (yes, it is that simple).
  4. Consider growing a cover crop, such as a mixture of crimson clover and hairy vetch, to turn into soil next spring. The “green manure” breaks down, leaving rich organic matter in the soil.
  5. What good is winter if not eyeing seed catalogs? In most states, dispensaries are the only legal place to get seeds. For the most stable genetics, look for regional seed companies with transparent breeding practices. My date is Humboldt Seed Company– you can actually order seeds from their website (legally deliverable to California, Oregon, Maine, and Oklahoma with more locations to come).

Podcasts are the new app, which were the new blogs. Remember a few years ago when everyone was doing an application. Now everyone from Michelle Obama and Will Ferrell to Oprah and Robert Plant, yes the frontman of Led Zeppelin, has their own podcast.

According to Allyson Marino, founder of podcast company Lipstick & Vinyl, there are currently over a million podcasts. One of the reasons the numbers are so massive is that it is egalitarian media. Although the big names are getting into the podcast game, anyone can still start a podcast.

So should you? Well, if your goal is to start a podcast thinking you’ll make almost the $ 100 million Joe Rogan received from Spotify, no. It probably won’t happen. But, according to podcast expert Marino, if you’ve got a story to tell and the stamina to follow, then this might be for you.

What makes Marino, who started in podcasting in 2013 after working in radio, an expert? To begin with, she has seven years in the relatively new field, entering the pre-Serial, the show that introduced the term podcast to many, she says proudly, and is equally proud to point out that the more than two dozen shows that her Lipstick & Vinyl represent, helping with distribution and advertising, rank in the top five percent of public podcasting.

Focusing on female podcasts, Lipstick & Vinyl is working with two new shows – Amended, Humanities New York and The gardians, of DAME magazine – launch tomorrow (August 26) in honor of Women’s Equality Day.

For the passionate and motivated Marino, who takes podcasting as seriously as her love for Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, after years of working in the testosterone-fueled media world, she wondered why half of the people did not have the opportunity to share their stories. . This is how she started Lipstick & Vinyl.

I spoke at length with Marino about the competitive world of podcasting, what makes a good podcast, what it takes to start a podcast, how to get noticed, why Rogan’s deal is good for the whole community in the world. podcast and why she dreams of Madonna’s podcasts. and Britney Spears.

Steve Baltin: How many shows you work on are Lipstick & Vinyl productions and how many shows do you work with?

Allyson Marino: The business model is really focused on the independent podcaster. We have one under our label called The only one in the room. But we all want to support the freelance podcaster. They are led by dynamic women and advocates for working mothers, journalists, actresses, YouTube personalities, documentary filmmakers, authors, New York Times bestselling authors – they’re all at every level in terms of where they’re experts and where they’ve built their audiences. They self-produce it and then we do the distribution, we do the ad sales, all the business stuff that goes with it and help them grow their audience.

Baltin: What was the impetus for Lipstick & Vinyl?

Marino: I worked in network radio for several years before podcasting and it’s no secret that the media is completely male dominated. It is fair and it has been for a long time. Whenever you read the history of modern communications, it is dominated by men. So when I started my podcast career, I worked for other major networks from their childhood to their ascent. And I really couldn’t help but notice the huge hole in women’s outlook. And after that experience, I thought, “I know how to do this. So I just started the network with two shows in 2018 and we’ve grown ever since. Anyone behind a microphone has the platform to tell a story and change our perspective on the world, can change our priorities. And so, without strengthening the voice of women, we are leaving out at least half of the population. So I think this perspective is really powerful. And those women who are in front of the microphone need strong business support behind the microphone to give them every chance to succeed and make money.

Baltin: What first attracted you to the podcasting format?

Marino: I wish I could tell you that since I was a young girl, I have always seen the possibility and the bright future of podcasting (laughs). It was really a business issue and the media was changing. So it was a challenge for me. And it was really a case of, “Okay, what’s another national media outlet that I know of that I can know a thing or two about?” And podcasts were that medium. They are very similar and they reach not only the country but the world. It was a big fight to make brands understand that. But it made sense to me. It was just kind of a next step at that point.

Baltin: Was there an early show that got you excited about podcasting media?

Marino: Yeah, Serial was revolutionary. When I first heard it I thought, “Wow, this is what a podcast can be. It’s an incredible storytelling. I was in my car when I was mainly listening to it and it took me to a whole different space. But after that, the one that really got me excited, it was pretty meta, it was a podcast called Start about someone starting a podcast business. It was so personal and so interesting, especially working in podcasts, I couldn’t get enough of it. It was very cool. All the places we were taken to during this show, like finding him a business partner. Fast forward, this company, Gimlet, was bought by Spotify for around $ 300 million.

Baltin: What makes a good podcast for you now?

Marino: A well-told story can be very interesting regardless of the subject. So it’s really about finding people who tell great stories. There are some really talented people out there who don’t have the backing of a huge traditional media company. And they still have something very important to say. I think the most important thing is that the person doing the podcast is really passionate about what they’re talking about and knows what they’re talking about. You can tell when someone is full of it. So I really like that you have to be legit and I’m always looking for podcasters who are really motivated because it’s such a heavy burden, as you know, to create and then you have to figure out how to tell people about it. So that’s a lot. So for the people I know who have done all of this work, we are just helping them with the rest, finding a larger audience, professionalizing them as a business, and monetizing them.

Baltin: So with the idea that there are over a million podcasts, what do you tell people who want to create one?

Marino: Lipstick & Vinyl is always interested in well-told stories. [But] for anyone considering starting a podcast, it’s way more than what I have a story to tell. There must be meat on the bones. If you’re thinking of starting a podcast, don’t (laughs). However, if you are planning on starting a podcast and you have the stamina and they are committed to seeing the story throughout the process, this is a good start. And these days when you pitch a story or idea to someone that you want to help make that show or help you do anything to promote the show, you have to do the job first. It’s no longer about having an idea and getting closer to a professional podcast network. We’re not going to take a look if you haven’t created a pilot episode, haven’t done your research, and been very smart about who your podcast is for. ” Why are you doing this ? Why does the world need this? And who are you talking to? It is very important to have a listener in mind so that you can test everything against that person.

Baltin: How many podcasts do you listen to per week?

Marino: I am a powerful listener. The average podcast listener listens to six or seven podcasts per week. I listen to more than that. I can talk a lot about podcasts.

Baltin: With over a million podcasts, how do you find the best?

Marino: It’s the magic of lipstick and vinyl. We are curators, we select the best expert female voices in a variety of topics and areas of life. There must be curators. You mention Joe Rogan. And now he has even more firepower behind him with the Spotify deal. It’s also huge on YouTube, so it’s not just people who are listening. These are the people watching. So it has a huge audience that probably doesn’t listen to other podcasts. And now if they need to go to Spotify to listen to their podcast, they’re going to be exposed to a lot more podcasts. So it’s really a good thing for everyone. Right now, podcasts as a whole reach 26% of the US population. So, in order for big brands like Coke and Toyota and the name of the huge Super Bowl announcer to truly engage in podcasting, there has to be a large following. Joe Rogan therefore helps everyone to create a larger audience for the media and helps us to become a true mass media. It’s a growing business. Our business is expected to reach $ 1 billion in advertising revenue next year. So I feel very lucky when people see double digit declines in their business, but it is attracting more and more talent and it is booming. So as the business grows Lipstick & Vinyl grows and being here since the beginning of professionalizing podcasting, it looks really solid.

Baltin: Who is the musical person you would like to do a new podcast with?

Marino: Madonna. It immediately occurred to me. Can you imagine the stories she has to tell? Britney Spears would create a huge following in podcasts because so many women are fascinated by Britney because they grew up with her. Everything Britney does fascinates millions of people.

Top line

Some senior Democratic officials are ready to set an income limit of $ 50,000 for the next round of stimulus checks, according to The Washington Post, as Democrats try to build support from those like West Virginia Senator Joe Machin (D) to help push through President Joe Biden’s $ 1.9 trillion stimulus package.

Highlights

The idea is only in the conversation phase and has not been incorporated into legislation, according to the To post, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

Discussions reportedly included an income cap of $ 50,000 for individuals, $ 75,000 for heads of households and $ 100,000 for joint filers in order to receive complete checks, a significant decrease in eligibility limits compared to previous checks.

For now, Democrats are offering full checks to people earning less than $ 75,000 and joint filers earning less than $ 150,000 per year, the same eligibility criteria used for previous sets of checks.

Democrats on Tuesday passed a budget resolution aimed at pushing the stimulus package through the weakest of margins – 50-49 – without a single senator crossing party lines.

The White House has requested stimulus checks of $ 1,400 and has signaled that the reduction in the payment amount is not up for negotiation, although details of who qualifies for the checks are apparently still being chopped up.

Income ceilings would bring the Democratic package more in line with a republican proposal released Monday, which called for $ 1,000 stimulus checks that would go to people earning less than $ 40,000 per year with lower payouts for single filers earning up to $ 50,000 per year.

Surprising fact

President Joe Biden’s administration has been pushing to extend stimulus check eligibility for some who previously could not receive checks, including young Americans such as students who are still claimed as dependents by their parents.

Large number

$ 1.9 trillion. This is how expensive the stimulus package proposed by the Democrats is. It includes increasing the national minimum wage to $ 15 an hour, $ 400 a week in federal unemployment benefits and hundreds of billions of dollars for state and local governments, among other initiatives. The proposed Republican plan costs around $ 618 billion.

Key context

Democrats appear poised to move forward on the package even as Republicans call for more negotiations, saying Biden is breaking his promise of increased unity and two-party politics. But Biden and other leading Democrats have stressed that the priority is for the package to be passed quickly. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (DN.Y.) said on Tuesday that Biden “fully agrees” with using the reconciliation process to pass the stimulus package, which only requires a simple majority. Democratic leaders won a major victory on Tuesday in hopes of pushing the stimulus package through this process, when Manchin – widely regarded as the most conservative Senate Democrat –voted to go ahead with the reconciliation process, even after arguing that stimulus checks need to be more specifically targeted than before. Each Democrat voted in favor of the decision without a single Republican vote to back it.

The country’s largest paramilitary force, the CRPF, received the highest number of 73 bravery medals for carrying out counterterrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir and various states affected by Maoist violence.

He also won four Kirti Chakras announced by the Defense Ministry, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) said in a statement.

Inspector Pintu Kumar Singh, Chief Constable Shyam Narain Singh Yadava and Constable Vinod Kumar of the 92nd Battalion were posthumously decorated with the Kirti Chakra, the second highest medal of bravery in peacetime.

The three were killed in a fierce shootout with terrorists that raged for nearly 34 hours in Jammu Kashmir Kupwara in February 2019. Two foreign terrorists were killed in the shootout that claimed the lives of five members of the security forces, including two from the JK Police Special Operations Group (SOG).

Deputy Commander Rahul Mathur, who was seriously injured during a counterterrorism operation in Batmaloo, Srinagar, in September last year, also received the Kirti Chakra, the force said.

The officer, head of his home response team in the Kashmir Valley, was on treatment at Base 92 hospital for about 10 days after being shot twice in the chest and abdomen during this action. He is “back in action” now and has returned to duty, a senior officer said.

A medal tally released by the Union Home Office showed the force was awarded the President’s Police’s Highest Medal for Bravery (PPMG), posthumously for the Deputy Deputy Inspector Mohan Lal who was killed in the 2019 Pulwama terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, while the rest of the medals belong to the second highest category of the Police Medal for Bravery (PMG).

Jammu and Kashmir Police received 52 Police Bravery Medals, followed by 20 by the Border Security Force, 17 by Delhi Police and 13 by Maharashtra Police and others.

Of the 69 Police Bravery Decorations won by the CRPF, 61 medals were presented to soldiers who demonstrated courage and dedication in the Jammu-Kashmir theater, while the remainder came from operations in the Jammu Kashmir. States Affected by Left Extremism (LWE). .

“It is a moment of great pride for all the strength that the grateful nation has bestowed upon us and has honored the bravery and bravery of our brave men with a total of 73 Bravery Medals on this Republic Day.

“We salute the bravery and selfless dedication to duty of ASI Mohan Lal who received the PPMG posthumously,” said CRPF Director General AP Maheshwari.

The around 3.25 lakh strong force leader said such decorations gave “a huge boost to the morale of the force’s personnel” and paid tribute to the three troops who were posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra and to Deputy Commander Mathur for carrying out a successful operation. .

Among the recipients of the PMG are two officers of the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Komal Singh and PC Jha.

Singh received his second Bravery Medal this time for “showing conspicuous bravery in the face of adversity” during an action against the Maoists in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh in June 2015.

Jha was awarded for a September 2018 operation in Jammu where the CRPF killed three foreign terrorists in a joint operation with other security forces.

The quote said Jha and his troops have displayed “indomitable fighting spirit and dedication in the face of clear and imminent death.”

The CRPF, raised in 1939, was designated as the country’s main internal security force and formed the core team of counterterrorism forces deployed to JK, including the UT army and police.
