Bothwell Foundation Offers Free Mammograms During Pinktober

A mammogram could save your life. If you need them, The Bothwell Foundation offers mammograms during their Pinktober Celebration. The best part, you can get one for free during Mammo Days.

Simply. mammograms can help your doctor check for breast cancer, and if the mammogram is abnormal, your doctor may do more tests to confirm you have it and start treatment.

According to breast cancer.org, most health organizations like the American Medical Association, American Cancer Society, and National Cancer Institute say women 40 and older should have regular mammograms as part of their preventive health care routine.

Mammograms can help your doctor find breast cancer at an early stage. Early detection of breast cancer gives patients more treatment options, and in many cases, if caught early, the cancer can be removed without the need for a mastectomy. The negative points ? Mammograms are not perfect, and sometimes false negatives or false positives can occur.

According to breast cancer.org Here are three things you should know about mammograms:

  • They can save your life. Early detection of breast cancer reduces the risk of dying from the disease by 25 to 30% or more. Women should start having mammograms every year at age 40, or earlier if they are at high risk.

  • Do not be afraid. Mammography is a quick procedure (about 20 minutes) and the discomfort is minimal for most women. The procedure is safe: there is only a tiny amount of radiation exposure from a mammogram. To relieve the anxiety of waiting for results, go to a center that will give you results before you leave.

  • Get the best possible quality. If you have dense breasts or are under 50, try having a digital mammogram. A digital mammogram is recorded on a computer so that doctors can zoom in on certain sections for a closer look.

The Bothwell Foundation Mammo Days take place on Friday October 8 and Friday October 29 between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. CDT. Women over 40 can request a free mammogram by calling 660-829-8888 and mentioning “Free Mammo Day”. Mammograms will take place at The Bothwell Diagnostic Center, 990 Winchester Avenue. Make your appointment today!
