Best of Summer: See some of Durham’s most scenic patios
It’s terrace season and Durham has plenty of scenic options, from rooftop terraces to terraces by the water or overlooking green fields.
Restaurant LE PORT
PORT is well known in Durham for its waterfront patio that overlooks Frenchman’s Bay and is especially scenic at sunset. The menu includes wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, pastas and cocktails.
This Whitby restaurant has a year-round terrace dubbed ‘Butchie’s Backyard’ overlooking a green space and stream. It is also suitable for dogs. Butchie’s is owned by Food Network chef Andrea Nicholson and serves smoked meats, fried chicken, seafood, homemade pies and craft beer.
The Toad Stool Pub and Restaurant
The patio overlooks the green space and is described on Facebook as “like being at the cottage”. There’s a large menu of classic pub fare like burgers, sandwiches, wings, pasta, and nachos.
The second Wedge Brewing Co.
The dog-friendly beer garden was designed with edible landscaping and custom picnic tables. You are allowed to bring your own food to take away, with beers brewed on site – no outside drinks are allowed, however.
Want to step back in time and dine at a National Historic Site? The Parkwood Tea House overlooks gardens and a 200 foot fountain. It is operated by Berry Hill Food Co. of Oshawa and formal tea is available as well as a regular menu.
Bistro 67 is located on the campus of the W. Galen Weston Center for Food at Durham College. The 40-seat patio overlooks the fields, where food is grown for the field-to-fork menu.
The Canadian Brewery
This Canadian-themed sports bar and grill opened in the summer of 2021 and includes a rooftop terrace. The pub food and comfort food menu includes everything from burgers, wraps and poutine to pizza, wings and nachos – topped with a Canada flag topping, of course.
The Jube Pub and its terrace
Located in Oshawa’s Lakeview Park, Jube Patio offers park and lake views. The menu includes many pub classics like burgers, wings, nachos and fish and chips.
Slabtown Cider Co.
This craft cider house in the Oak Ridges Moraine offers picturesque views of fields, forest and orchard from its terrace. The menu offers everything from pizza and pasta to butter chicken and, of course, cider, including the chance to get a sampling flight.
